1950's / Pin Up Girl 30/11/2012

What is Pin Up?

A pin-up girl, also known as a pin-up model or cheesecake, is a model whose mass-produced pictures see wide appeal as popular culture. Pin-ups are intended for informal display, e.g. meant to be "pinned-up" on a wall. Pin-up girls may be glamour models, fashion models, or actresses.

I am taking inspiration from the pin up girls drawn by Alberto Vargas, George Petty, and Gil Elvgren.

Make up
Plan
This is my initial plan for the Pin Up / 50's make up.
I plan to use a light brown eye shadow on my lid which increases in darkness as it reaches my outer corner of my eye. I will line my top lid with black liquid eye liner and create a cat eye wing on the outer corner, I will also line my bottom lash line 1/4 of the way in. I will then apply black mascara.
I plan to use a deep red lipstick and follow my natural lip line.

Outfit
Plan

  • A 50s full circle dress
  • Lined stockings
  • Heels

Photoshoot

I plan to use an outside location and use Gil Elvgren's 'Red, White, and Blue' (1966) as inspiration for this shoot.
I want it to be a blanket on a patch of grass, with a picnic basket in the forground. I will be holding an apple with a -fake- caterpillar coming out of the top and falling back in surprise.
I may have problems with this as it is currently snowing outside so I will have to come up with a back up plan.

My other plan is to use Gil Elvgren's 'A Warm Welcome' (1959) as inspiration, and place the shoot inside by the fireplace. Toasting marshmallows whilst sat by the fire.

EPQ Lesson - Critical Analysis of Progress 10.12.12

In today's lesson we looked at how far we were in our project and if we were on track or not and what actions we were going to take as a result of today's lesson.

We filled in the 'Critical Evaluation of Progress' worksheet in pairs or groups of three. I was paired with Sam for the first section and we dicussed the pros and cons of my Plan.
Pros: *Precise dates.
*Updated plan when a task was completed.
*Udated plan if I couldn't complete a task and moved it to another day.
*Organised tasks around my free time.
*Monitored my progress through my plan.

Cons:*I need to complete my plan for Jan, Feb, and March
*As it is electronic it is hard to access my plan if I haven't got a computer available.
*How will it look when I print it out to hand in, will the comments be viewble?
*I need to elaborate on my comments.

We also looked at our SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats).
Strengths: *A clear set idea
                 *An original Idea
                 *...

Weaknesses: *Very little primary research apart from the Surveys that Iplan to do on the final images I produce

Opportunities: I couldn't think of any opportunities that I could take advantage of apart from maybe asking my Mum about the gothic styling as she was a Goth in the 1980's

Threats: *I may have to spend money on getting some equipment or clothing that I need.

Finally we looked at if the progress we had made so far had fulfilled the requirements for AO1 and AO2.

AO1: *Clear topic and objective.
*Clear plan stating when things will be completed.
                   *Monotoring progress on the plan.
Need to do: *Write down aims and objectives clearly so that they remain constant.
Likely to score 7/10

AO2: *Books and internet sources used
Need to do: *Need to make sure I reference the sources used correctly.
                           * Could look at including more primary research
Likely to score 6/10

I then wrote the following on the actions I will take as a result of these discussions:

I intend to print off my plan and research so that it is more accesable. I need to write down my aims and objectives so that they wil remain constant. I need to complete my plan for January, February and March; I also need to stop putting things off and just do them.

My supervisor feed back was as follows:

Excellent advice! I agree that it's now really time to get moving. these are all clear and specific objectives that will help you to improve your project.

EPQ Lesson - Proof Reading - 3.12.2012

In today's lesson we explored Proof reading. We Proof Read a document that had 30 mistakes in it and we had to find them all. As we went through the document we found increasingly more mistakes.
This exercise helped me to realise that I need to check my Grammar and Punctuation in word docuents such as my Blog.  I also didn't know that you were supposed to put two spaces after a full stop in a typed document.

EPQ lesson - Time Managment and Project Planning 24.09.12

In this lesson we practised our planning skills by planning a 16th birthday party for 50 of our mates considering the venue, our party outfit, and other factors than needed to be planned. We did this by creating our own mind maps first and them putting them all together on the board, to evaluate what we had forgotten to plan or what was planned well.
We then looked at Gantt charts and used them for planning the party. I found that this was an easy way to help me keep on track as it was visual

Make Up
Plan

I plan to use a soft pink eyeshadow that gradiates into Burgandy at the outer corner. I will line my eyes with black liquid eyeliner and creae a small wing. I also plan to line my bottom waterline with a brown pencil.
For the lips I am initially planning to use a pale pink lipstick or lipgloss.
I will create contoring by applying blush to the apples of my cheeks and bronzer just above my jawbone and to the sides of my nose to make it look smaller; I'll also apply a light powder to the top of my nose to also make it look smaller.

1960's Mod Girl 18/11/12

What is Mod?

The word Mod is short for Modernist.

Make Up
Plan

This is my initial plan for the 60's make up. Bright light blue eyeshadow on the eyelid, with black eyeliner across the top lash line and just above the crease. I will also emulate Twiggy's doll lashes using black eyeliner.
I initially planned to do an orange-red lip but have now changed this to a pale pink, almoast neutral colour as all the attention is supposed to be drawn to the eyes.
I will apply long fake eyelashes to the top lash line and use very little contoring on my face if any.

Make Up Test
2/1/2013

On reflection I think that i will use a white eyeshadow instead of blue as it will add a pop to the eye if i take the image in black and white.

Sources used
  • Images of twiggy
  • The book 'Retro Makeup : Techniques for applying the vintage look' by Lauren Rennells - This helped with the technique for drawing the line above the crease and also the botom lashes.

Outfit

The main fashion influence of the 1960's was the Mini Skirt. Popularised by Mary Quant in her famous 'Bazaar' boutique.

Plan
I plan to pair a monochromatic geometric mini skirt with a plain white shirt buttoned to the top. I will wear a plain black suit jacket, natural tights (for modesty) and black smart shoes.

Hair

In the 1960's hair became alot larger with hairstyles such as the Beehive (also known as the B52). Curled hair also fell out of style with straighter styles seen on people such as Bridget Bardot. Short hair was also in often with sharp asymetric styles or a clean style mimiking mens hair that was seen in the Mod culture.

Things became alot more natural in popular society as seen with Bardot's messy beehive.
